Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a menstrual disc and a menstrual cup? Which of them is best for me?
There are a number of important differences to consider between discs and cups, starting with their placement in the body. Whereas discs are inserted above the vaginal canal, cups are worn in the vaginal canal itself. As a result:
• Cups are not to be worn during sex. With discs, sex is not a problem.
• Most menstrual cups offer about 0.5 oz (20 ml) of capacity. Discs can hold up to 2 oz (60 ml).
• Cups require suction to remain in place. Discs stay put with no suction needed.
• Cups can be used for up to eight hours. Discs can be used for up to twelve.
How do I know which size is right for me?
Whether you wear cups or discs, the process is quite simple. For detailed instructions, check out our sizing page.
What can I expect when I use a disc or cup for the first time?
Quite simply, you can expect a better period. Greater comfort, higher capacity, no additives and, yes, no smell. Did we mention that discs can be worn during sex? It's a game-changer.
What are the benefits of Lumma's™ products over tampons and pads?
For starters, discs and cups are sustainable and made of medical-grade silicone, without any added chemicals. The additives in tampons and pads, on the other hand, can reduce your body's natural flora, reducing the natural lubrication that protects the health of your vagina, and creating an unpleasant smell as soon as you bleed.
In addition, the average user of tampons or pads will wear about 540 every three years. In that same amount of time, you'll go through just one menstrual cup or disc. That's a lot of money and landfill space saved.
Why should I buy two sizes rather than just one?
The position of the cervix can vary widely from period to period and from day to day, so the same person may need different sizes at different times. That's why we offer a "buy one, get one" deal, so you get a free cup with every cup you buy or a free disc with every disc you buy. Picking two sizes will help keep you covered through every cycle.
How are the discs and cups inserted?
The process starts with finding the right size for you. To get started, see our guide here.
How are they removed?
Unlike our competitors, our menstrual discs include a silicone string that makes the removal process simple. To remove menstrual cups, just squeeze to release the suction, then pull out. More detailed instructions can be found here.
How long can I use the same disc or cup?
Three years. Yes, you read that right.
Can I use discs or cups if I'm having a heavy period?
No doubt. Our discs and cups are designed to handle the lightest to the heaviest flow.
How should I clean my disc or cup?
Simply boil it in water for three minutes. Your disc or cup will be sterile, clean and good to go.
Can I really have sex while I'm using a menstrual disc? How about menstrual cups?
If you're wearing a disc, go right ahead. Since discs are worn above the vaginal canal, your partner won't even notice. Menstrual cups, on the other hand, are worn inside the vaginal canal and should not be worn during sex.
Can I swim when I'm wearing a cup or disc? Can I work out?
Yes and yes. Our products are so effective that swimming and workouts are no sweat. Your period should never get in the way of your health.
Can I use discs or cups with an intrauterine device (IUD)?
All insertable menstrual products, including tampons, carry a small risk of complications with an IUD. Anyone using an IUD should consult with their doctor to make sure that cups and discs are right for them.
Can discs and cups be used after childbirth?
Yes, menstrual discs and cups are completely safe for use following childbirth.
Can teens use menstrual discs and cups?
Yes, our products are safe for anyone who's begun to have menstrual cycles.
What makes Lumma's™ products stand out from the rest?
Aside from our ten sizes of menstrual cups, we're the only company whose discs come in three sizes, ensuring the ideal fit for every day of your cycle.
In addition, our cups feature our patented technology that allows you to grip them for easy removal. Our discs are the only ones on the market to feature a string to help with removal, not to mention three unique colorful designs. No two products are quite the same.
How can I know that Lumma's™ products are safe?
Our products are 100% safe for use as directed. All of our menstrual cups and discs are registered by the federal Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency as well as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Is Lumma™ environmentally friendly?
Absolutely. Our products are made of medical-grade, and unlike tampons and pads, they contain no harsh chemicals that can harm you and the environment. Also, our products are made to last. The average person who uses tampons or pads goes through about 540 every three years. One Lumma cup or disc lasts just as long. That's a lot of landfill space (and money) saved.
Where do you ship your products?
